Highlights from the Affili@SYD Conference

I’m just back from the first Affili@SYD conference, and wanted to share what I considered some of the highlights and point you in their direction, as I think there was some incredibly valuable content that anyone starting an online business should know.

The keynote was from Jay Berkowitz, the CEO of www.tengoldenrules.com, and was certainly one of the most engaging presentations I have heard on online and affiliate marketing. Jay spoke on 10 Super Success Strategies for Internet marketers, which covered effective SEO, blog building and the importance of personal brand and what tools you can use to build it. One such site was PeoplePond, which allows you to aggregate all of your online presences and manage your reputation, something I will be covering in depth soon. Jay’s advice is incredibly practical, I recommend checking out his site TenGoldenRules.com

Another definite highlight was from Lee Hopkins, who spoke very passionately about monetising Social Media effectively, or more specifically, leveraging the right combination of Social Media to maximise your traffic and customers. Did you know that YouTube is the second most popular search engine after Google and that Facebook is the most popular video and photo sharing site? Again, highly recommend checking out his site Better Communication Results.

The panel discussion with Jay, Lee and Laurel Papworth (one of the few Australian bloggers recognised by AdAge magazine as being one the Power150 internationally) was highly entertaining, where Laurel spoke about the rippling of content across various Social Media touchpoints in order to get your message out and discussed, and at what point your reputation becomes vital. You can find Laurel’s site here.

Email marketing best practice was also a hot topic from the director of email strategy at Lyris, and I will incorporate some of these learnings into my next post about Why Your Business Needs Email Marketing.

All of the presenters were well chosen, for the reason that they were not necessarily experts in affiliate marketing, although they were represented. They were experts in aspects of internet marketing that can play a part in affiliate marketing strategy, an approach that will pay dividends for you regardless of your business model – there is a lot to learn from those in the industry, but not necessarily in your niche. I highly recommend attending next years conference when it rolls around.
