Perception is Everything

So last week I spoke about the things you claim your business to be, and this week I want to talk about how people perceive your business.

I was waiting to cross the street yesterday afternoon and noticed this picture taped to the light pole.

So, consider this. You are looking for a home business opportunity that will allow you to make money. This ad promises it. It also promises enough part time money to overtake your full time income. It promises more from life.

Sounds great, doesn’t it? Will you tear off one of the little tabs at the bottom and text your first name to the number listed? Probably not.

Why? Because this ratty photocopied ad is taped over the top of another ratty photocopied ad, which is in turn taped to a light pole.

Google’s AdWords and AdSense programs revolutionised online advertising when they were launched, allowing greater accountability with advertising dollars and an opportunity for webmasters to make a little cash for their site. In the current economic climate, it allows shrewd spend for businesses looking to maximise ROI.

I have clients ask me my thoughts on whether they should use them, or how they effectively use one or the other. Ultimately it depends on your business model, but there are a few things you need to keep in mind when determining if they are right for your business.

AdWords is a Pay Per Click system, where you bid against other advertisers to appear against specific search terms, and the highest bids are the ones that appear closer to the top. So when I am talking with a client about using AdWords, my first question is around what price they put on acquiring a lead.
